Now that I have had both feet firmly planted into the electronic music business, specifically the Deep House side of things, I have found there are very few dark sides. They are there though, just scratch away a little and some of the things you learn are mind boggling… at least they were to me. I came into running a label through love. Pure and simple. No intention of paying all my bills through it, just the desire to break even if possible and enjoy the work and pleasure of sharing what I enjoy with others. I assumed that for the most part, in such an underground genre, this was the same thing that was behind many labels. I have to say, the labels I love and enjoy the most are in it for the right reasons.

In a genre where selling 50 tracks in 5 days gets you in the Top Hundred, it is very easy to see running a Deep House label is never going to buy a mansion on a hill. Especially when between distribution and online digital shops have already taken 50-70% of the profit off the top before either you or the artist sees a dime. What I was not anticipating was the shadiness of some who were willing to throw a wrench in that little system. As many people who consider themselves true underground Deep House fans will tell you, rarely is the Top 100 a true reflection of the best in Deep House (the only exception being Traxsource, which I hear less grumbles about then any other online shop). The main reason for this is that labels and even some artists are so obsessed with this “status” symbol of Top 100 charts, they are willing to cheat the system. Want to get into the charts? Enlist the help of your friends or coworkers and have them buy your track over and over again… pay people to buy your track… lie about the track… rip off other artists that have gotten into the Top 100… then go and spam everyone and their mother. Email them, spam their facebook wall, whatever it takes.

Whooooaaaaa… This was not the world I thought I was walking into. Call me idealistic (I won’t mind, I pride myself on wanting to make and leave the world a better place) but I thought it was all about the 4×4 beat and the love of the groove and sway of people on a dance floor. Now, not everyone does this, I truly hope it is the minority of people who engage in this sort of thing actually. What I forgot to consider when I started this label with Alvaro was how obsessed people could be about this fabled thing called “Fame”. How quickly people forget it is about the quality and substance of the music, how it makes you feel, and start to focus instead on how many times the producer has topped the charts, who they have remixed for and had remixes from and who they have DJ’d alongside of. Does it really matter if the music doesn’t make you dance your ass off or grab ahold and not let you go? For me it does.

That is why, simply (or well not so simply) you won’t ever catch DeepWit Recording or DeepWit Uncovered engaging in this sort of practice, or the other shady practices about in the scene. I am not going to enlist anyone to buy a track from us and pay them back under the table. Or purchase the “1000 Friend Packages” for our soundcloud and facebook, making us appear more “popular” then we are. Or paying any “big name” artist for a subpar track, simply for their big name. We have too much respect for the music, the artists and the fans.

Almost a year now from our first release with Cadatta… looking back I have learned so much, not just about some of the shady business practices but also about the real love and appreciation for music that is out there. I just have to look back at our time spent in Athens, Greece, look at all my new friends I have made and all the smiles they have brought to my face to know that at the heart of it all Deep House is where it is at. The place that no matter how far the label may range, no matter how many years or sublables later, we will always come back to this genre and the real people in it.

The follow up track on the release “Another Boring Love Story” is a track that can only be described as having a retro feel fused with more currant sounds which lead to the experience of having the past filled with today’s memories. With a build up into the deep house of now, it is a dark deep original fusion between the past and present, as all love stories are. DeepWit label owner, Alvaro Hylander’s remix is a deeper more sensual version of the original. Alvaro’s organic style lends itself perfectly to the lights out sweaty and hypnotic groove of the track while keeping a touch of the retro elements of the original helping to bring the past into the present.

Sierra: How is life going for you?

Marcelo Mendez: Ups and downs, times of high stress job on the radio, but I agree as things are going, the most important for me is that the personally and emotionally I feel very happy and stable. There’s always something or someone wanting to overshadow all that though.

S: What is the most challenging thing about running the Station?

MM: The Programming without a doubt. The radio is not only music, it is also form. This last time I have wanted to start with communication, I would like to have a space where I can inform about the changes that are happening inside the scene, what is happening to the labels, their latest releases, so many things that I can inform about, because I feel that the people are not yet accustomed to stay long at the computer to be literally just bombarded with only music. If a person doesn’t have the virtue of “communicating”, I mean, to tell others, is doomed to failure, I see that as a challenge with a very high risk.

S: What is the most enjoyable thing about running the Station?

MM: Being in the forefront of the music, meeting new people, helping and giving everyone the opportunity to showcase their work. I think that is one of the things that must be highlighted throughout this time for me.

S: As someone who listens to and enjoy’s your DJ mixes, I was curious how long have you been DJing and how did you get your start into electronic music?

MM: Thanks, I’m very happy to know that you and many people enjoy my work, it all begins in the year 1981 and is definitely confirmation of all occurs in 1986 and began working professionally in 1987 as a resident on Saturdays @ Fanfaren Club,  from there I start with what is called today Electronic Music, fan of Acid House, Hip House, etc… and everything that has to do with the Dance Music. But I am also able to use my Digital or analog turntable as a percussion instrument. (I consider myself a good Turntablist from the first generation).

S: If you had to pick a genre that you most enjoy mixing what would it be and why?

MM: My obsession for music never fails to be defined in a fixed style, but I can give an example of what I am currently working, then if I had to choose the style that I enjoy mixing would be Deep House, because there I can find all the very particular elements that I like and that distinguish it from any other style, a part containing all Soul of the House music, The crisp Sound, warm, sensual, sexy voices in some cases, everything! I feel very comfortable mixing Deep House!

S: When did you decide you wanted to run a radio station and when did you finally see your idea take shape into what we now know of as Tunnel FM?

MM: I always liked to spread the music so uninitiated ears can hear and learn more about this style of music, first in 1998 was only a website (djsets.se) where I shared exclusive sets from different dj’s with different styles that characterize them. After a time I began to be more requested by different Radio Stations, until I had 4 different shows with permanent residence, in 4 different Radio Stations.

The Radioshows were successful and gave me the opportunity to have more hours of show on air, and it was there I decided to create and work all that time in my own Radio (Online), and so in the summer of 2002 was born “Tunnel FM” and everything that has happened in between is history, now everything is more stable and I see that some things are already moving by themselves and are taking shape. I am currently working with Calin Marian, who is in charge of contacting interested labels who will promote their material and offer our support, I am very happy with him. Calin is a very smart and capable person, he puts a lot of passion to his work, always looking out for the welfare of the Radio. I have a very special affection for him and there is also a friendship between us for many years.

What this means for all of the music lovers, artists and DJ’s out there, is that there is little to no collected information on what you guys really want. From how you prefer to be treated by labels as an artist, to how you prefer to be introduced to new music as a listener. As a huge lover of both music and research, I thought this would be a really nice side-project to undertake. So this is exactly what I am doing. I have started with 3 very short 10 question surveys to help me gleam some truth of what is really wanted by the Deep House World. This is just the start and over the next several weeks, the people closest to me will be harassed by me personally to help me complete my little quest with a few more surveys, and once I have all the data compiled and organized, I will be sharing it with all of you

Somethings are timeless like the holiday season and beautiful moving deep house music. DWR009 is the perfect reflection of timeless music with its alluring melodies, smooth well-formed breaks and exquisitely executed compositions.

The Original Artist, Proj3kt Dharma, a mysterious Canadian producer brings us a track both deep and smooth. Forgotten By The Universe, with it’s organic mix of elements, from the trilling guitar to the sensual vocals, helps you to float off into another more peaceful and love filled universe while maintaining an empowering although more mellow groove to help you on your journey.

The second track on the release is “Forgotten By the Universe” (tONKPROJECT From Another Galaxy Remix). Between his label Behaviors and  his unforgettable signature sound and talent, tONKPROJECT frequently makes his way onto Beatport’s Deep House Top 100 and has released on labels such as Apollo, Etoka, I Records, Lost My DogDeep, Class Records, Urban Torque, Plastic City and of course Behaviors. With his remix he brings a lustrous track full of the smooth sensual feel of the original while bringing the power up with drivingly simple yet moving percussions and baselines.

Jeff Fontaine & Deep Spelle offer us their “Lost In Space Remix” as the third track. Both talented artists each in their own right as well as working together also as the duo HouseRiders, they have had several releases, including those on I Records that continuously make their way onto Traxsource Top 100 and are quickly gaining notoriety as some of the best upcoming Deep House Producers on the scene. This remix presents the quality production and crisp deep elements they are known for alongside a heavier although still smooth kick to bring this track to the dance floor. The sensual touches alongside the bright shakers and feel of the gently driving baseline make this remix almost impossible not to move to.

 To round off the release, we bring Addex to the table with remix full of power and a completely different approach. Addex is another Artist very familiar with Beatports Top 100 with releases on labels such as Etoka, I Records, Apollo, Lovezone Records, and Soul Industries. With this simple yet very percussive and rhythmically organic remix, you can’t help but be forced onto the dance floor. Rounding out an otherwise more mellow release this track will for sure get the people on the floor moving.

Dezent is a full power deep house release straight from Germany. Max Volkholz heads the EP with two commandingly deep originals. Although still relatively new to the scene he is proving to be a producer worth watching out for with releases already on Alma Soul, Deep Nota Records and Beatwax with a Vinyl on the way alongside releases on several other quality labels. Starting with the title track “Dezent” he dives right into what deep house is all about, deep kicks, warm fluid base and just enough sexy urban feel to make you want to move. Alongside the Original we bring you a dark and deep remix from Nadja Lind, with a futuristic twist  on what the track would sound like on another planet. Nadja needs little introduction as one of the most prominent female producers with several releases not only on her own label Lucidflow but also releases across several other labels and music genres with her musical duo Klartraum. The next Original from Max on the release is “Herr Glotz”. The liquid deepness and unique groove alongside the warm uplifting pads speaks for itself not only in quality but its ability to make you want to hear it over and over again. The remix of Herr Glotz comes from another German producer, Tom Shopper, with a more concentrated deep feel with its throbbing kick and more to the point groove aimed at the dance floor. This deep house release from a fully german perspective leaves little to be desired offering up some of the best music and emerging talent in the genre.

With DeepWit Recordings we pride ourselves on focusing on the music we love the most, Deep House. With that in mind, we do receive a lot of great music that does not fall inside of what we like to call the “DWR Sound”. We really want DeepWit Recordings to be a label you can relay on for deep, organic, moving house music and one that is not going to clutter your email and facebook with a bunch of irrelevant non-sense. Yet it can be a real shame to pass up some of the amazing tracks we receive, either due to lack of space in the release schedule or because it lacks that special DWR feel and sound. So this is where the idea of DeepWit Uncovered came from, a place to release music we still love and enjoy but does not fit on our current label. Sometimes Alvaro loves a track but it is too tech house for me, and sometimes I love a track that is too ambient and melodic for him. DeepWit Uncovered is where these great tracks will find a home!

Another big reason for wanting to start a sub-label came about through speaking with artists and the struggle of getting full length albums out there, opposed to just EP’s and Singles. There are a lot of talented house musicians out there, that have some great tracks but just can not find a label willing or able to give them the space and control to have an album. I love the idea of giving the artists as much creative control over their works, so why not give artists the chance to do exactly that with full length albums on DeepWit Uncovered?

So with that, I would like to introduce you all to DeepWit Uncovered! You can look forward to the first release near the beginning of 2012  :)

DeepWit Uncovered is a sub-label from DeepWit Recordings bringing the same quality and passion for music, just in a different form. With Uncovered we will focus more on the fringe areas of our musical tastes, bringing a wider more diverse selection of artists and music for your listening pleasure. Here you will find music ranging from Deep Tech House to Chillout and more Ambient House alongside all of those tracks that break the genre lines. With the aim of bringing a more compilation styled catalogue we will also be releasing Albums from Artists, leaving the artists more in control of their artistic works. With that we present, DeepWit Uncovered… for music behind the scenes.

1. First and foremost before you send a demo or even a promo to a label or artists, please show that you care and take the time to check the music style they are involved with. Then send your demo to the proper email or how ever else the label as asked demos to be sent to them.
2. Be Polite!!! Be Friendly!!! Labels and bigger artists are approached every day by many producers, and being rude, short, and simply not using your manners will make you look both unprofessional and give them little interest in working with you.
3. Provide and easy and fast way to access the music you want the label or artist to hear. If I have to click 15 things and then dig through 3 folders before finding the track you want me to hear, mostly likely I am going to be less receptive to whatever it is.
4. Provide some relevant information about yourself. How long have you been producing, WHAT YOUR NAME IS, if and who you have released with in the past (a short version with only the most important of your works please). For bonus points, also include why you want to release with that particular label.
5. Don’t send a track to be placed on a label that has already been for free download. Great if you want to give your music away for free, but honestly I have no interest in a track that has been out in the public domain for free. No matter how good the track, it makes my label look less professional to release a track like this as well as making it impossible to fight illegal downloads if I did release it.
6. Be Patient! The bigger the label, the longer it may take for them to get back to you. Keep in mind, your demo may be the 50th one they received that day, or maybe they have a hundred other things they are working on before they can really sit down and give your track the proper listen it deserves. So always give a label or big artists a couple of weeks before contacting them again.
7. Send finished tracks. Or at least tracks that are 90% finished. On a side note, it’s great if you have an idea of who you want to remix the track, but always remember this is a business relationship first and foremost, and some labels may prefer to have their own remixers or ones you can both agree on to do work on a track. I have sadly had to turn down tracks that I loved because the remixes it came with were horrible.
8. Do not take criticism or refusals personally. Many labels have pretty full release schedules, so if your track maybe is not what they are looking for or maybe they just do not have room for it on their catalog, this is no reason to become rude, pushy or brag about how it does not matter because other better labels would love to have your track. This just makes you look bad and most likely that label will never want to work with you in the future.
9. Avoid sending out MASS demos. When I receive a demo that is being sent to 50 other labels, I am less likely to be interested in the track. You should really reach out to labels you appreciate and enjoy, and if possible give a reason for WHY you want to work with that specific label. This makes it a lot more likely that I will be happy to respond, pass along a list of other labels to check out if I can not take the track and remember you in the future when you send us new music to listen to.
10. Keep in mind label owners talk to each other. So if you are rude we will talk about it, and on the upside if you send us something great we will pass it on to other labels and be much happier to establish a relationship with you

• do your research (*respect* – hands down, just know know who you’re talking to regarding their experience, professional discog/bio/career duration) • be personable, be professional, be courteous/patient (considerate about “right timing” on both ends) and be humble!!! i always notice the best and ‘biggest’ in the industry are in fact the most humble – so people are best not to attempt to “impress” anyone with the wrong attitude • lastly, some polite human to human conversation as to why you’re reaching is always welcome – this is business, but we’re Artists because we’re passionate, so if you don’t connect, business is easy to turn down. oh! AND DON’T DO IT ON FACEBOOK! lol – maybe the first “hello” but that should follow with, can i have your email address to send you my proposal/link/music/ideas – “real email yO”

•For me is important the “humanity”, I hate to see mails and soundcloud messages with only “Listen my demo”… I need to know that you know my label and if you are a person or a robot from hyperspace before work with you!! Good humor is important for a collaboration!!
